Casa di Dante
Situated next to Piazza Sidney Sonnino, La Torre degli Anguillara is a medieval structure that had to be rebuilt several times from earthquake damage and decay. The oldest parts of the structure date to the 13th century, and it was rebuilt with the tower we see today in the 15th century. The palazzo switched hands many times across the centuries. It served as housing, a cellar, a slaughterhouse, a stable, and artistic center before being given to Casa Dante in 1921.
Dante Alighieri was a famous Italian poet and author of the famous, The Divine Comedy.
Casa di Dante was founded in 1913, but established in 27 April 1914 as a non-profit organization with the aim of promoting conferences and public readings of Dante’s works, or those connected to them. It contains a specialized library, open to the public and equipped for research and study activities. This structure is believed to have been the residence of Dante while in exile.
