The Mattei House

The Mattei family have ties to Rome dating back to 1282 and are likely a branch of the prominent Papi family, from whom they inherited the prestigious position of “guardians of the bridge and banks”, during the times of papal vacancy and/or transition and were charged with maintaining public order.

Their pro-pontifical services allowed them to rise up the ranks in Roman aristocracy and earn them immense power in the Roman political scene.

But such an immense responsibility came with great peril, Casa Mattei was home to the site of the massacre of five members of the Mattei family during the wedding of Girolamo and Olimpia Mattei in 1555 – while not much is known about their deaths, it is an ever-prevailing story amongst locals. The remains of several family members were put to rest across the street at the Church of San Benedetto, which they had private access to.

When the last of the Mattei’s died in the 17th century, the property was passed off to multiple private owners and underwent several restorations. At one point, a brothel, Loquanda della Sciaquetta, occupied the space. Now, it is once again home to private residences and the remaining buildings in the Piazza in Piscinula are bustling restaurants where you can still see ancient Roman structures in the basements.
