Piazza in Piscinula
Named for the Roman thermal baths and swimming pools that occupied the ancient space, or for the large tanks in which fish were held before being sold at market, Piazza in Piscinula is home to not only the Church of San Benedetto, but also to Case Mattei, the residence of the noble Roman Mattei family which dates back to the early 14th century. The buildings were connected to a later 15th century structure.
While the modern day piazza still houses Case Mattei and the Church of San Benedetto, it is near the Tiber Island and is also the scene of several vibrant restaurants in Trastevere, with basements at the Roman level of construction! The medieval history of Trastevere is more visible here than in other parts, much like the nearby Piazza dei Mercanti.
