Piazza di San Cosimato

San Cosimato is located in a vibrant square nestled in the heart of Rome’s Trastevere neighborhood. San Cosimato consists of several key community and historical cornerstones, the first being the church of San Cosimato which was founded as a medieval monastery in the year 950 under the name SS Cosma e Damiano. The name “San Cosimato” later developed as a contraction from this original name, and which was later adopted by the entire surrounding square. The San Cosimato church has a rich cultural history, that includes its transition into one of the wealthiest convents in the early 14th-15th century. The convent and surrounding estate played a major role in the development of this corner of Trastevere and contained many fascinating stories throughout its medieval history. This includes housing the sister of a Pope in the 15th century and one of its earliest renovations coinciding with the 1475 Jubilee plus many more diverse historical narratives.  In addition to the historical church, San Cosimato contains a vibrant communal space which includes a diverse variety of shops and a vegetable market. The market is the beating heart of San Cosimato which was established in the 1920’s and contains several stands spanning three generations of familial ownership. San Cosimato is a unique one-of-a-kind blend of past and present which embodies the Trastevere Roman experience.

The market is open roughly from 6am - 1:30pm, Monday - Saturday
