San Crisogono
Located next to Piazza Sonnino, the Basilica of San Crisogono was built in the 4th century under Pope Sylvester I. The church was built in honor of the martyr Chrysogonus, who died during the persecution of Diocletian. It was rebuilt once in the 12th century and then again in 1626. The building has gone through many decorative changes, but it’s purpose has always remained the same.
Inside you will find a shrine dedicated to the Blessed Anna Maria Tahiti, a Christian Mystic who was beatified in 1920. Beatification is a process that recognizes a deceased persons entrance into heaven, giving them the title of ‘Blessed’. If you are interested, her relics can be found in the neighboring monastery.
The columns within the church are reused antique columns. This is known as spoila, and was commonly used when building new churches. Spoila is when stones, such as columns, from an old structure are taken and repurposed for new construction or decorative purposes.
The feast of St. Chrysogonus is celebrated on the 24th of November!
