San Francesco a Ripa
The first Franciscan Church in Rome, San Francesco a Ripa Grande was originally built upon a Benedictine monastery dating back to 949 AD. St. Francis of Assisi would stay here during his visits to see Pope Innocent III.
Recognized now by Baroque enthusiasts, the facade of San Francesco a Ripa was designed by architect Mattia de Rossi in 1682. Once inside, visitors are encapsulated by the various funerary monuments, chapels and frescoes. Most notably, is the statue Ecstasy of the Blessed Ludovica Albertoni by Bernini. Which can be found in a small chapel alongside the nave, where visitors can experience a rare and intimate moment of peace and reflection by gazing upon the work of one of Rome’s greatest sculptors.
